Little Digital Boxes
We like components, patterns, and systems that scale. We're even unapologetic fans of Tailwind. These UI libraries have become the foundation for countless new software as a service and marketing websites. Their prevalence creates a landscape reminiscent of Malvina Reynolds' satirical song "Little Boxes."
Reynolds critiqued cookie-cutter houses popping up in the suburbs, and we're seeing the same thing happen online. Websites and applications built on the same frameworks and using nearly identical components produce a homogeneous digital neighborhood.
“There's a green one and a pink one And a blue one and a yellow one And they're all made out of ticky tacky And they all look just the same”
Convenience Is Cool
There's no denying the advantages of these UI libraries:
- Rapid prototyping and development
- Consistent user experiences
- Improved accessibility
- Faster time-to-market
These benefits are crucial for startups and small businesses, as they can help them launch products quickly and cost-effectively.
Conformity, Not So much
I think the reward for conformity is that everyone likes you except yourself. — Rita Mae Brown
As digital products mature, differentiation is key. In a sea of similarity, survival and growth come from standing out.
Social media has received most of the attention in that regard. How can you market yourself as different? As you perfect that messaging and fine-tune your product or company image, eventually, users will find out if your interior design keeps up with your curb appeal.
Eventually, a product has to evolve beyond the framework to thrive with a unique identity. Inject your personality into the online presence beyond the aesthetic. Curate a distinct brand experience that resonates with your target audience.
Break the Box
To differentiate your brand or product:
- Prioritize a design that reflects your unique value proposition
- Invest in proprietary features that address specific user needs
- Create a cohesive brand that permeates every aspect of your digital presence
- Experiment and iterate to stay ahead of market trends
Digital Diversity
When navigating so much sameness, it's easy to forget the value of a good user experience. UI libraries are great starting points but can hinder creativity.
The most memorable digital products and brands dared to be different. Let's upgrade the little boxes and create something unique. In doing so, we contribute to a richer, more diverse digital community that offers experiences as unique and varied as the users it serves.
